Recent history has demonstrated the power of stories in the successes of the Civil Rights and Gay Rights movements. When individuals made their voices heard, disclosing who they were, they spoke from their hearts. These brave individuals educated the general public on inequality and injustice. They helped broaden public support to bring about change.
Focus on Abortion: Americans Share Their Stories harnesses the power of authentically told stories, seeking to build bridges of understanding between disparate voices in the often-difficult conversations around abortion. Shared abortion stories have the ability to expand our understanding of complicated issues, moving beyond over simplified discourse, pro or con, to the complex narratives of individuals with the deepest connection to abortion. The project also aims to build a "community" of those who have experienced abortion. By coming up close to others' stories, the viewer realizes he/she is not alone.
